Abandoned kitten and puppy become best friends

275x250.jpg An abandoned kitten and puppy at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have dispelled the age old saying ‘fighting like dogs and cats’ by becoming best friends.

At just weeks old, Buttons the dog and Kitty the cat were both abandoned. Now they are now being hand-reared together at the animal home and have become very close.

In fact the inseparable pair are so close they sleep together, play together and even feed together.

Battersea Veterinary Nurse Sascha Taylor. She says: "Normally we’d hand rear puppies and kittens separately but we thought we could try putting them together as they are both so young.
275x250.jpg "Luckily it’s paid off as they adore being with each other and do everything together – it’s really very sweet.

"Hand-rearing them is hard work – I have to feed them every two hours, even throughout the night – but it’s totally worth it. We’re not sure if they’ll be rehomed together, though it would be great if they did!”

Buttons is a four week old Jack Russell Terrier whose mum and dad came in to the Home after their owners could no longer care for them. Button’s mum Poppy arrived heavily pregnant and gave birth to a litter of eight puppies. Sadly Buttons was the runt of the litter and was struggling to feed on her mother’s milk, so staff at the Home decided to hand-rear her.

Shortly after staff started hand-rearing Buttons, a week old kitten arrived at the centre after she was left behind by her mother. A kind passer-by found the defenceless and vulnerable kitten and took her to Battersea where she was given the name Kitty, who is now four weeks old.

Because they are still very young, Buttons and Kitty are not available to be viewed by visitors, and they are not ready to be re-homed just yet.
