Aharon Haliva called for an investigation, even as he takes responsibility for the mistakes that led to the deaths of almost 1,200 Israelis.

The head of Israeli military intelligence has resigned over his handling of the October 7 attack in southern Israel.

Aharon Haliva, head of the Military Intelligence Directorate, said he and his department took responsibility for the Hamas attack, which killed some 1,163 people and took more than 200 hostages.

“We did not fulfill our mission, I take full responsibility for the failure,” he said in his resignation statement.

“The Intelligence Division did not fulfill the task entrusted to us. Throughout my duties, I knew that with authority comes great responsibility.”

Haliva is the highest-ranking official to resign over the October 7 attack, which was unprecedented in Israel’s history and provoked much anger among the population for being allowed to happen.

While accepting her own responsibility, Haliva also called for the creation of a state committee “that can investigate and discover in a thorough, in-depth, comprehensive and accurate way all the factors and circumstances that led to the difficult events”.

The October 7 attack was followed by six months of Israeli bombing and a suffocating blockade of the Gaza Strip. More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed so far and the coastal enclave has plunged into a humanitarian catastrophe.

The latest report on food security by a UN-backed initiative finds that the entire population of Gaza, estimated at around 2.3 million, faces “acute” food insecurity, while half of the population suffers from a higher level of food insecurity. classified as “catastrophic”.
