Wooden car faster than a Porsche
With it's 4.6 litre V8 engine and 700bhp the Splinter sportscar sounds like it could compete with many supercars, and it would ... or should that be wood.Despite being made from maple, plywood and MDF the two-seater Splinter has a top speed of 240mph and weighs just 1,134kg.
Joe Harmon, 27, from North Carolina, who is head of the project, says: "Wood is a truly amazing material to work with, this car is designed to push boundaries and prove the potential of wood as a material."
The car has a laminated wood veneer chassis and wooden wheel rims, suspension is provided through laminated wooden arms and springs made from osage orange wood.
Joe added: "It is not made from any carved-out, chunks of wood, but moulded laminates."
The Splinter is due to hit the road later this year though a price has not yet been set.
