This Friday in Comodoro Py a historic condemnation was heard: Américo Balbuena, together with his two former chiefs of the Federal Police, Alejandro Sánchez and Alfonso Ustareas, were sentenced for having carried out political espionage on social, human rights, union and political organizations.

Judge Daniel Rafecas’ ruling sentenced the three for breach of duties as a public official -to the maximum of the sentence contemplated in these cases-, to two years in prison and double the disqualification from holding positions. The fight for ten years between human rights organizations, social organizations, journalists from the Walsh Agency, left-wing parties together with the lawyers for the lawsuit Matías Aufieri, Liliana Mazea, Myriam Bregman, Carlos Platowsky from CeProDH, They managed to provide abundant evidence and testimonies about the infiltration carried out by the Federal Information Corps, passing Balbuena as a journalist from the Walsh Agency. From that gained trust, it allowed them to gather information for ten years -from 2002 to 2013-.

“Is a great conquest of the entire human rights movement who has been fighting in the country for decades, and from so many organizations What are they complainants In the cause, communicators such as the members of the Walsh Agency, who were the first victims of this infiltration of this Information Corps, which has been operating for many decades,” said Matías Aufieri, and stressed that “it is unusual that cases of espionage come to this instance of oral trial”.

Myriam Bregman stated that with this sentence: “It was shown that they are not self-employed, because Balbuena, two of his chiefs of the Federal Police, were convicted. Political spies do not act alone or on their own. The fight we had showed that no, that they have an organic structure and that they follow orders when they carry out this type of political espionage.”

One of the points of the ruling is that a copy of this ruling be sent to the bicameral commission that monitors the operation of the intelligence agencies and the security commission of the National Congress. In particular, it asks that the secret rules that regulate the existence of the Federal Police Information Corps, which were part of the debate in the trial because it is a body dedicated to political espionage, be analyzed and contrasted with the constitutional laws.
