The Russian government announced, this Saturday (24), that it reached an agreement with the leader of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, after the withdrawal of troops who started an uprising on Friday (23). The negotiation between the parties was intermediated by the government of Belarus.
According to the Kremlin, Russia will not prosecute the mercenary leader and will not punish the other members who participated in the rebellion.
“Avoiding bloodshed (in Moscow) pays more than pursuing someone criminally,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
According to Moscow, the agreement foresees that Prigozhin will go into exile in Belarus and leave the front in Ukraine and St. Petersburg, his hometown; no other members of the Wagner group who participated in the rebellion will be criminally prosecuted; and mercenaries who did not join the uprising will be integrated into the Russian Defense Ministry.
Troops from the Wagner group were approaching Moscow by this afternoon, and the Kremlin feared a confrontation in the Russian capital.
Prigozhin then announced the retreat of the troops, who were at a distance of 200 kilometers from Moscow. The group’s mercenaries have also already abandoned Rostov, a city in southern Russia that they had occupied yesterday.
