Ingredients
1/4 cup wheat flour
4 tablespoons of butter
3 cups of milk (can be whole or semi-skimmed)
salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
A pinch of grated nutmeg (optional)
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese (optional)
Directions
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat.
- When the butter is completely melted, add the wheat flour.
- Stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes, until the mixture is lightly browned.
- Gradually add the milk to the mixture, little by little, stirring well to incorporate the flour as you add the milk.
- Keep stirring until the sauce starts to thicken.
- Season the white sauce with salt, black pepper and a pinch of grated nutmeg, if using.
- Continue cooking the white sauce over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches a creamy, thick consistency.
This can take 5-7 minutes. - If desired, add grated Parmesan cheese to the sauce and toss until the cheese is completely melted and incorporated into the sauce.
- Remove the white sauce from the heat and it is ready to be used in assembling the lasagna.
