This Saturday, December 30, a massive assembly of Unidxs por la cultura took place; more than 1,000 people participated in person and virtually in the ATE Nacional Auditorium. The federal call had more than 70 leading speakers from different artistic and communication sectors, unions and students, who decided to promote a plan of struggle towards the national strike on 1/24 called by the CGT. And the coordination of the sector in the face of the attack represented by the DNU and the omnibus law that closes the National Fund for the Arts, the National Theater Institute, defunds the popular libraries, the INAMU, the CONABIP, the INCAA, and the Fomeca. In addition to laying off thousands of workers from different State agencies.
Participation in the assembly was of great diversity, bringing together artists (cinema, theater, music, dance, writers, visual artists), along with technicians, cultural workers, libraries, cultural centers, communicators, members of indigenous peoples and students , which were expressed in a democratic space of exchange.
The debate expressed the seriousness of these measures in the different sectors of culture at the national level and also the anger, the need to coordinate and mobilize. From Jujuy to Patagonia and from Mendoza to Buenos Aires, with the voice also of the cultural struggles of the native peoples, they intervened with a willingness to confront the DNU and Javier Milei’s mega bill with different proposals. And with much indignation at the adjustment to culture itself, the attack on the right to protest and freedom of expression that are so necessary for art and communication.
Reflections and expressions emerged in search of unifying struggles: “Culture is not negotiated”, “Let’s not let them turn off culture”, “Let’s be a resistance that proposes”, “we are not an island”, are some of the slogans that were heard . Along with many proposals for cultural actions that were noted and will be carried out by working commissions.
In the framework of a warm exchange that had as its axis the fight to overthrow these measures without giving up anything, it was agreed on the need for the Strike called by the CGT and the two CTA for January 24 to be taken as a tool of struggle . And contribute from culture and communication, with our methods to achieve massiveness in the streets, as the only element of real pressure on the political power in Congress and the union leadership to stop this shock of adjustment and cuts to all the people and culture. .
For this reason, the first action of this fight plan that was launched was to accompany the hug to the National Institute of Theater and the National Fund for the Arts carried out on December 30 in the afternoon. The proposed motions are summarized in the following voted resolutions:
