O US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed last Tuesday, the 9th, the transfer of a new batch of Iranian weapons to Ukraine.

These weapons, previously seized in the Red Sea from forces associated with Yemen, include a significant arsenal intended to bolster Ukrainian military capabilities in its fight against the Russian invasion.

According to CENTCOM, the batch comprised more than 5,000 AK-47 rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, RPG-7 grenade launchers, and more than half a million rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

This weaponry was confiscated in actions conducted by the US Department of Justice against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), accused of trying to transfer the weapons to Yemeni forces.

The CENTCOM statement details that the ammunition was initially seized from four unflagged vessels, intercepted between May 2021 and February 2023. It is estimated that the material is sufficient to equip a Ukrainian brigade.

This is not the first time the US has relocated Iranian munitions to Ukraine. In October, the transfer of around 1.1 million munitions, including 9,000 assault rifles and anti-tank equipment, was announced.

This support comes at a critical time for Ukraine, which marks the start of the third year of the conflict with Russia and is facing arms shortages due to depleted stocks of its Western allies and legislative impasses in the US over additional military assistance.

The alarming situation was expressed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with the Washington Post, where he highlighted the dependence on American support for the country’s defense. In efforts to circumvent the limitations, the US sought collaboration with Turkey to increase the production of artillery ammunition to sustain Ukrainian resistance against Russian forces.
