Hungarian slices are a delicious dessert of Hungarian origin that usually includes a sweet pastry filled with a mixture of nuts or poppy seeds.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of wheat flour

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 1 teaspoon of dry yeast

  • 1 cup of warm milk

  • 1/2 cup melted butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 cups of ground walnuts

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

  • 2 cups of ground poppy seeds

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

Directions

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar and salt.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let it rest for a few minutes.
  • Add the dissolved yeast, melted butter and eggs to the flour mixture. Stir well until a homogeneous dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rest in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  • In a bowl, mix the ground walnuts, sugar, milk and vanilla essence.
  • In a bowl, mix the ground poppy seeds, sugar, milk and vanilla essence.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Divide the dough in half and roll out each half into a rectangle.
  • Evenly spread the walnut filling on one half and the poppy filling on the other half.
  • Roll each rectangle of dough into a roll and place on a greased baking tray.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-40 minutes, or until the Hungarian slices are golden brown.
  • If desired, you can add a powdered sugar frosting topping or drizzle a simple glaze over the Hungarian slices after they are baked.
