Ingredients

  • 500g wheat flour

  • 2 teaspoons of sugar

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

  • 7g dry yeast (or 15g fresh yeast)

  • 300ml of warm water

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (optional)

Directions

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar and salt.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
  • Let it rest for about 5 minutes until it starts to foam.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the yeast mixture and, if desired, olive oil.
  • With a spoon or your hands, start mixing the ingredients until the dough begins to form.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and begin kneading with your hands for about 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean tea towel and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • After the resting time, preheat the oven to 220°C.
  • Remove the dough from the bowl and knead again for a few minutes to remove the air.
  • Shape the dough into a loaf shape and place it in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
  • Cover again with the clean dish towel and let it rest for another 30 minutes.
  • After the resting time, make a few shallow cuts on the top of the bread with a sharp knife.
  • Place the bread in the preheated oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until it is golden on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
