Chomsky says coup attempt in Brazil was more organized than in the US: “They almost succeeded”
Noam Chomsky, one of the greatest intellectuals of today, said in an interview given to UOL that the attempted coup d’état in Brazil promoted by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on January 8, was more “organized and planned” than the events on the Capitol, starring supporters of former US President Donald Trump, in 2021.
“In the case of Brazil, it was much better organized and planned. The effort was to create enough chaos that martial law was declared by the army and they would move towards something similar to the military dictatorship of 1964. Something Bolsonaro praised while in power. They came very close to achieving their goals,” he said.
Chomsky also pointed out that in Brazil, unlike what happened in the US, the entire political class condemned and opposed the outcome of the elections: “There was a difference. In Brazil, contrary to what happened in the US, the entire political class condemned and opposed it. This is not what happened in the US”.
“In the legislative elections, we have electoral denialists in the Republicans and who today, in a way, control the Chamber. In Brazil, this did not happen. The government acted quickly and had the participation of a wide range of society leaders”, he added.
He also pointed out that the former captain’s stay in Florida could be better for Brazil: “I hope he stays at Disney. He does less damage there. Even for his reputation, he stays at Disney while his supporters are being put in jail. This can have an effect. He has been silent and can do less damage. He can be extradited. But I hope not.”
