Ingredients
2 cups of milk
2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons wheat flour
Salt to taste
White pepper to taste
Nutmeg, grated to taste (optional)
Directions
- In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter until it is completely liquid.
- Add the wheat flour to the melted butter and stir well with a wire whisk or wooden spoon, forming a paste called a roux.
- Cook the roux for about 1 minute, stirring constantly to prevent burning.
- Gradually add the milk to the pan, stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
Be sure to incorporate all of the milk before adding more. - Keep stirring until you get a smooth and homogeneous mixture.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook the béchamel sauce, stirring regularly, until it thickens and reaches the desired consistency.
This usually takes about 5 to 7 minutes.
If the sauce seems too thick, you can add a little more milk to adjust the consistency. - Season the sauce with salt, white pepper and grated nutmeg to taste.
Remember to taste and adjust seasonings as needed. - Remove the béchamel sauce from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes before using it in your culinary preparations.
