Barbecue sauce is typically made with a combination of ketchup, vinegar, sugar, spices, and sometimes liquid smoke.
Ketchup provides the base flavor, vinegar adds acidity, sugar provides sweetness, and spices add flavor.
Here’s how to make yours:

Ingredients

  • 1 chopped onion

  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1/2 cup (tea) apple cider vinegar

  • 1/4 cup (tea) brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  • In a pan, heat the oil and sauté the onion and garlic until soft.
  • Add ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt and black pepper.
  • Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for about 30 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

Notes

  • For a spicier sauce, add more black pepper.
  • For a sweeter sauce, add more brown sugar.
  • For a thicker sauce, add 1/2 cup (tea) of water or meat broth.
