Make your homemade tomato sauce with these ingredients and step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg of ripe tomatoes

  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar (optional, to balance the acidity)

  • Fresh basil leaves (optional, for flavor)

Directions

  • Wash the tomatoes and make a cross cut at the base of each one. This will make it easier to remove the skin after boiling them.
  • In a large pot, boil enough water to cover the tomatoes.
  • While the water is heating, fill a bowl with ice water and a few ice cubes. This will be used to cool the tomatoes quickly after boiling them.
  • Once the water is boiling, submerge the tomatoes in the water for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, until the skin starts to come away.
  • Remove the tomatoes from the boiling water and plunge them into the bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  • Now, you can easily peel the skin off the tomatoes.
  • Cut the tomatoes into small pieces and set aside.
  • In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and chopped garlic, and sauté until they are soft and lightly golden.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and stir well.
  • Cook for about 20 to 30 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes are broken down and the sauce has thickened.
  • If desired, add sugar to balance the acidity of the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • If you like basil, add some fresh basil leaves to the sauce and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  • Remove the sauce from the heat and allow it to cool slightly before using it. You can use it immediately or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few days, or freeze it for later use.
