The co-founder and CEO of Anthropic explains why he thinks artificial intelligence is on an “exponential curve.”
In 2018, Dario Amodei worked at OpenAI. And looking at one of his first AI models, he wondered: What would happen if you fed an artificial intelligence more and more data?
He and his colleagues decided to study it and discovered that AI didn’t just improve with more data; improved exponentially. The curve of AI capabilities rose slowly at first and then shot up like a hockey stick.
Amodei is now the chief executive of his own AI company, Anthropic, which recently launched Claude 3 – considered by many to be the strongest AI model available. And he still believes that AI is on an exponential growth curve, following principles known as scaling laws. And he thinks we’re on the steep part of the climb now.
When I talk to people who are building AI, scenarios that seem like distant science fiction appear on the horizon in the next two years. So I asked Amodei on the show to share what he sees in the near future. What advances are coming? What worries you most? And how should societies struggling to adapt to change and governments slow to react to it prepare for the pace of change he predicts? What does that line on your chart mean for the rest of us?
