Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup wheat flour

  • 4 tablespoons of butter

  • 3 cups of milk (can be whole or semi-skimmed)

  • salt to taste

  • Black pepper to taste

  • A pinch of grated nutmeg (optional)

  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese (optional)

Directions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat.
  • When the butter is completely melted, add the wheat flour.
  • Stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes, until the mixture is lightly browned.
  • Gradually add the milk to the mixture, little by little, stirring well to incorporate the flour as you add the milk.
  • Keep stirring until the sauce starts to thicken.
  • Season the white sauce with salt, black pepper and a pinch of grated nutmeg, if using.
  • Continue cooking the white sauce over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches a creamy, thick consistency.
    This can take 5-7 minutes.
  • If desired, add grated Parmesan cheese to the sauce and toss until the cheese is completely melted and incorporated into the sauce.
  • Remove the white sauce from the heat and it is ready to be used in assembling the lasagna.
