Ingredients
2 cups of fresh cream
1 kg of potatoes (preferably firmer potatoes such as English or Asterix potatoes)
1 cup of milk
2 cups grated gruyere or emmental cheese (or any cheese you like that melts well)
2 minced garlic cloves
2 tablespoons of butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Grated nutmeg (optional, but adds a special flavor)
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C.
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin slices (about 3-4 mm thick).
- You can use a mandoline or a vegetable slicer to make sure the slices are even.
- In a saucepan, heat the fresh cream, milk and chopped garlic over medium heat.
- Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste.
- Let it boil for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and set aside.
- In a refractory greased with butter, make a layer of sliced potatoes, cover with part of the grated cheese and pour a portion of the seasoned cream on top.
- Repeat the process, making alternating layers of potatoes, cheese and cream, until all ingredients are used.
