This Thursday, 31st, a large diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM)named “Jianghai“, was released in Changshain the province of Hunan, China.

This TBM, with a record excavation diameter of 16,64 metroswill be used in the construction of the Tunnel do Rio Haitai Yangtzeem Jiangsumarked as the largest underwater highway project in the world.

A “Jianghai” was developed by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corp and by China Railway 14th Bureau Group Corp. 145 meters long and approximately 5,000 tonsthis TBM is equipped to carry out extensive and continuous excavation under the bed of the Rio Yangtze.

According to Song Huan, senior engineer on the project, in an interview with CCTVTBM will face significant challenges during construction, including maintaining soil settlement within a critical margin of 1 centimeter.

Furthermore, the scarcity of detailed geological research on the riverbed introduces uncontrollable variables into the process.

The machine incorporates significant technological advancements such as an optimized cutting head opening rate, a high pressure central discharge system and a mud cake monitoring system, making it easier to excavate a continuous section of 9.315 metros under the river. These innovations ensure a construction process that is not only effective but also safe.

The development and production of “Jianghai” highlights China’s expertise in the design and manufacturing of ultra-large diameter TBMs, consolidating the country’s role in the advanced industrialization of underground construction technologies, as reported by local media outlets.
