WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrived in Australia on Wednesday after accepting a plea deal that ends a 14-year legal dispute with the United States. Assange landed at Canberra airport at 7:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) aboard a private jet. He was greeted by media on arrival and warmly greeted his wife, Stella, and father.

Assange was freed from a protracted legal battle that included more than five years in a maximum security prison in the United Kingdom and seven years of asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. He was facing extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges and to the US, where he was accused of violating American espionage law. The plea deal allowed him to return home, ending years of legal uncertainty.
