Advance of the far right in European elections causes defeats for French and German leaders

This Monday, the 10th, Dmitry Medvedev, former president of Russia and current vice-president of the country’s Security Council, made comments about the advance of the extreme right in the European parliament, highlighting the defeats of French president, Emmanuel Macron, and by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

In a post on the former Twitter, Medvedev suggested that Macron and Scholz are facing consequences for having supported Ukraine in the war against Russia, ignoring, he said, the interests of their own countries.

Elections for the European Parliament, held on Sunday 9th, resulted in a serious defeat for the leaders of France and Germany, raising questions about Europe’s future political direction.

The far-right’s advance in the polls has led Macron to call an early national election, while Scholz faces a painful night, with his social democratic party suffering at the hands of traditional conservatives and the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni saw her position strengthened, with her arch-conservative Brothers of Italy group winning the most votes, according to exit polls.

The European People’s Party (EPP) will be the largest political family in the new legislature, gaining five seats and totaling 189 deputies, according to polls.

The election results were interpreted as a reflection of growing concerns about the cost of living, migration and the challenges of the green transition, as well as geopolitical tensions such as the war in Ukraine.

Political observers highlight that the pro-European center-right, center-left, liberal and green parties will maintain a majority, but reduced compared to previous legislatures.

Despite the advance of the extreme right, Ursula von der Leyen, current president of the European Commission, seeks to consolidate her leadership and warned about the dangers of political extremes.

She emphasized the importance of building a united front against extremist trends as she continues to seek support for her second term at the helm of the bloc.
