Presidents of Brazil and China reiterated their commitment to strengthening the United Nations as a path to stability in the world
In a telephone conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that his country supports the largest economy in Latin America and the Global South and asked that both maintain the role of the United Nations.
“In this regard, they highlighted the synergies between the respective national development projects, especially in the areas of infrastructure, ecological transition and technology”, says the note from the Brazilian presidency about the conversation.
Regarding the global scenario, Lula highlighted that Brazil and China are countries that play a “central role in defending multilateralism, international law and free trade”.
“In this context, Presidents Lula and Xi reiterated their commitment to strengthening the United Nations as a path to defending peace and stability in the world.”
China’s state news agency, Xinhua, also released information about the conversation between the two leaders, which took place after Lula’s criticism of the United States (USA) attack on Venezuela, in an article published in this week’s New York Times.
According to Xinhua, Xi told Lula that China and Brazil must safeguard the common interests of the Global South and jointly maintain the role of the United Nations in the “current turbulent international situation”.
“China is committed to always being a good friend and partner to the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), and to moving forward together in building the China-LAC community with a shared future”, highlighted Xi to Lula.
Finally, the two leaders agreed to maintain frequent coordination on issues on the bilateral agenda and of regional and global interest.
Latin America
The United States’ action in Venezuela raised concerns among Latin American countries about the risk of similar armed interventions in their territory and provoked criticism from the United Nations (UN).
In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today program, UN Secretary-General Antônio Guterres said the US was acting with impunity and the founding principles of the United Nations, including equality between Member States, were under threat.
In the article published on January 18 in the New York Times, Lula wrote that the future of Venezuela, and of any other country, must remain in the hands of its people.
“In more than 200 years of independent history, this is the first time that South America has suffered a direct military attack from the United States, although American forces have previously intervened in the region,” he stated.
“It is essential that the leaders of the great powers understand that a world of permanent hostility is not viable. However strong these powers may be, they cannot simply rely on fear and coercion.”
Threat in Greenland
Another threat from Trump, to use force to seize Greenland, a self-governing territory independent of Denmark, has also strained relations with security allies across the Atlantic.
The bombings in Venezuela and Maduro’s indictment also challenge China’s influence in Latin America and the Caribbean, where Xi has promised new lines of credit and more investment in infrastructure.
According to the Chinese leader, the strategic partnership signed in 2024 to align China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with Brazil’s plans in agriculture, infrastructure and energy transition exemplifies solidarity and cooperation between countries in the Global South.
