Vera Liddell, 68, of Chicago, Illinois, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to theft of more than R$ 8 million (approximately US$ 1.5 million) in public school food. The case was revealed by New York Post.

Working as the food service director for the Harvey school district, Liddell began her diversion scheme in February 2020, coinciding with school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For nearly three years, he used a school transport van to deliver food, originally intended for students studying remotely, to his home. The prosecutor in the case reported that more than 11,000 boxes of food were stolen.

The investigation that led to her conviction began after district administrators noticed that food costs were more than $300,000 over the annual budget, well before the end of the school year. Liddell was indicted in February 2023 on theft and leading a criminal scheme, culminating in her recent conviction.
