The expected IPO of space company SpaceX, one of Elon Musk’s companies, in 2026 could give the communications sector in particular a strong boost. This is stated by the American bank Wells Fargo.
According to the bank, the biggest impact is not on traditional technology companies, but on communications companies that benefit from economies of scale and satellite infrastructure.
Consolidation as the main driving force
In an interview with CNBC, Mark Smith, senior vice president and portfolio manager at Wells Fargo Advisors, points to the exceptionally strong consolidation within the communications sector. According to him, the number of mergers and acquisitions in a short period of time is unprecedented.
Mergers have made companies larger, more efficient and more profitable. This improves margins and makes the sector more attractive to investors. Smith states that this development will become more visible in stock prices in 2026.
The role of satellites is becoming increasingly important
According to Wells Fargo, SpaceX is playing a key role in this shift. Elon Musk’s company is building a global infrastructure for data traffic, internet connections and remote communications with its satellite network.
According to Smith, this development fundamentally changes how communication services are provided. While the sector has traditionally been seen as defensive and uninnovative, satellite networks are opening up new growth opportunities, especially outside urban areas and in regions with limited infrastructure.
More than a technology story
It is striking that Wells Fargo sees less of SpaceX’s impact on the technology sector. Although the company is technologically progressive, the economic impact, according to the bank, lies mainly with communications companies that use satellite capacity for their services.
In Wells Fargo’s analysis, the SpaceX IPO moves from a classic tech story to a broader revaluation of the communications sector.
IPO not yet officially confirmed
SpaceX itself has not yet announced an official date for an IPO. Market parties assume that an introduction to the stock exchange can take place in the second half of 2026. The estimated valuation will rise to more than 1,000 billion dollars.
According to Wells Fargo, such an IPO could act as a catalyst, not only for SpaceX itself, but for the entire communications sector. Especially in combination with further consolidation and acquisitions within the sector, this could lead to renewed interest from investors in a sector that has been out of the spotlight for a long time.
