A Volkswagen unveiled plans to cut thousands of jobs and close at least three factories in Germany in an effort to reduce costs amid significant economic challenges.
The company also announced a reduction in 20% in the salaries of workers who remain in Europe. The measure, revealed this Monday, 28, has no specific start date.
During a speech in Wolfsburgalready Germany, Daniela Cavallohead of the employee council, explained that the changes will include the elimination of products, quantities and shifts, as well as complete assembly lines.
Cavallo described the process as a “gradual weakening”, necessary to adjust the company’s operational structure in the face of new market challenges.
Problems facing Volkswagen include high energy and labor costs, strong competition from manufacturers Asiana decreasing demand in both Europa as in China and a slow transition to electric vehicle production.
The decision to restructure its operations will likely put Volkswagen on a collision course with unions.
In initial response, the company’s workers plan to halt production as a form of protest. Union leaders say they will continue to inform employees about the progress of negotiations and the measures to be taken.
