O National Electoral Council (CNE) Venezuela updated the election results this Friday, 2, confirming the reelection of President Nicolás Maduro with 51,95% of votes, equivalent to 6,408,844 votes.
His main opponent, Edmundo Gonzalezobtained 43,18% of votes, totaling 5.326.104 wishes.
The update occurs after the count was interrupted on Sunday, 28th, and the results were concluded 96,87% with a participation rate of 59,97%.
Despite the reaffirmation of the results by the CNE, the absence of detailed electoral records has generated criticism and demands from international authorities and neighboring countries, including Brazil.
The opposition, in turn, claims to have parallel counts that indicate a victory for González with 67% of votes.
On the same day, the Venezuelan Supreme Court convened an electoral audit session, inviting all ten presidential candidates to review the results.
The session was attended by eight of the nine candidates, and during the meeting, a document was signed by them, apparently validating the results announced by the CNE.
Enrique Márquez, one of the candidates, refused to sign and requested the immediate publication of the minutes by the CNE.
The legitimacy of the election was questioned by the Carter Centerwhich highlighted that the electoral process “did not meet international standards of integrity and cannot be considered democratic.” Furthermore, a “clear bias” by the electoral authority in favor of Maduro was observed.
During the week, threats of arrest against opposition leaders including González and Corina Machado were made by Maduro, raising concerns about González’s safety as he appears before the Supreme Court for the audit.
