Venezuela’s attorney general’s office said a court accepted the issuance of an arrest warrant for opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez on Monday.
The announcement was made via a post on Instagram, where a photo of the letter sent to the court was shared. The letter contained a stamp indicating receipt, but there was no documentation presenting proof of acceptance of the request.
Venezuelan prosecutor Luiz Ernesto Reyes previously requested the arrest warrant, accusing Gonzalez of crimes including usurpation of office and association with terrorism. The request was forwarded to a judge with jurisdiction over terrorism cases.
Nicolás Maduro was reportedly reelected with more than 51% of the vote, a result disputed by the opposition, which declared victory based on electoral ballots. This triggered protests and the detention of thousands on charges of terrorism and damaging state infrastructure.
The presidents of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico issued joint statements calling for electoral transparency and peaceful resolution of disputes in an attempt to avoid further violence.
