The libertarian government publicly and officially awarded the victory of the Venezuelan election to the pro-imperialist right wing of Edmundo González Urrutia and Corina Machado. It did so through a statement from the Foreign Ministry where they stated that “The Argentine Republic (…) concludes unequivocally that the undisputed winner of the presidential election that took place in Venezuela on July 28 is Edmundo González Urrutia. The Venezuelan people overwhelmingly expressed themselves in favor of his candidacy and the popular will must be respected.”

The statement also repudiated the charges leveled against Edmundo González Urrutia and Corina Machado by the government of Nicolás Maduro after he declared himself the winner without showing a single ballot in the elections of July 28 and protests against him began. These were responded to by the government with repression and mass arrests as a way to try to protect itself.

However, this accusation by Milei’s government is nothing more than right-wing demagogy, when it has been leading episodes of repression against those who demonstrate against its austerity policies, as was the case during the protests against the Bases Law, for which reason two protesters remain in detention. This is not to mention its denial of the crimes against humanity committed by the last military dictatorship, as was again made clear in the visit of deputies of the official bloc to the Ezeiza prison where they met amicably with genocidal soldiers.

With this statement, the government is (again) in tune with the United States and its allies, who seek to take advantage of the discredit of Maduro’s repressive and adjustment government to deepen their plans for plunder and subjugation in the country. This is the same right that now demands democracy when they have been behind multiple coup attempts in Venezuela, with the participation of Corina Machado herself.

As Milton D’León from the League of Workers for Socialism stated: “The political crisis is still open and it is not yet clear how we will get out of it, but all the scenarios, both from the right and from the Maduro government, none are favorable for the working people.”

Embarrassment

With this crisis at the center of the continental scene and with repercussions throughout the world, the government of Javier Milei has once again made a fool of itself in recent days, with ministries that contradict what its ministers have publicly stated. This happened after Foreign Minister Diana Mondino rushed out to claim on X that “After several days of the official electoral records of Venezuela being published at: http://resultadosconvzla.com. We can all confirm, without a doubt, that the legitimate winner and President-elect is Edmundo González.” However, moments later the ministry corrected Mondino and assured on that same social network that “The Argentine Republic is following the events in Venezuela with extreme attention and concern in order to make a definitive pronouncement.”

A blunder that once again exposed the mismanagement, internal disputes and short circuits in the libertarian administration in the face of a major crisis at a continental level and with direct repercussions in our country, where there is a significant community of Venezuelan migrants.
