According to UN commissioner, people in Gaza ‘are neither dead nor alive’
The number of people killed for hunger and malnutrition in the Gaza range has risen to 115 to the beginning of the war, according to the Territory Ministry of Health on Wednesday (24). In the last 24 hours alone, two more deaths have been recorded.
The deaths occur amid the siege imposed by Israel, which prevents regular entry of humanitarian aid, including food and medicines. Policy has been classified as a deliberate strategy of “mass hunger” by different organizations and international agencies.
In the midst of the crisis, six thousand humanitarian aid trucks, supplied with tons of frozen foods, are unable to enter the territory. At least 51 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks since the early hours of Wednesday (24), including 12 people seeking food in distribution centers.
The situation led to the Commissioner General of the United Nations Refugee Assistance Agency (Unrwa), Philippe Lazzarini, reporting the collapse of the humanitarian system. According to him, there are health workers fainting from hunger at the service stations and living with a single meal a day, when available. “People in Gaza are neither dead nor living, they are walking corpses,” he said, quoting the account of an agency employee at the Enclave.
Since October 2023 Israeli attacks have killed at least 59,587 Palestinians and left 143,498 injured, according to the Ministry of Health of Gaza.
Israel maintains block and prevents food distribution
On Wednesday (24), more than 100 humanitarian and human rights organizations announced an appeal demanding concrete actions of international governments to break the siege and allow the supply of supplies to the population.
The statement denounces that food, water and medicines are still retained at the borders, even with part of the population already facing extreme levels of malnutrition. According to the groups, more than 800 people have been killed in recent months during shootings in the vicinity of help centers while looking for food.
Israel, in turn, withdrew his team of ceasefire negotiations for internal consultations after Hamas has new conditions. Palestinian group response includes proposals on help entry, withdrawal of Israeli troops and guarantees for the permanent end of the conflict.
