United States Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said on Wednesday that the country is technically prepared to assume the operation of Ukraine nuclear power plants, if this measure is considered useful in the context of negotiations to end the conflict in the country. The statement was made during an interview with Fox News.
“We have immense technical experience in the United States to operate these plants. If it was useful to reach this end [resolver o conflito na Ucrânia]they would have the US operating nuclear plants in Ukraine. No problem. We can do that, ”said Wright.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump told Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky, that the eventual transfer of ownership of Ukrainian energy infrastructure to the United States would guarantee greater protection to the electrical system and nuclear plants.
According to Trump, this measure would not require the presence of American troops in Ukrainian territory.
The proposal is being discussed in the context of negotiations for a ceasefire in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
According to the White House, the details of the agreement should be treated next Sunday, 23, during a meeting in Saudi Arabia. The United States delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Counselor Mike Waltz.
On Tuesday, 18, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation lasting almost two hours. It was the longest dialogue between the two leaders since the resumption of direct contact between the governments of both countries.
The situation in Ukraine and the advances in negotiations for ceasefire were the main topics of the conversation, according to the US presidency.
The previous week, on the 11th, representatives of the governments of the United States and Ukraine also met in Saudi Arabia to discuss the possibility of a thirty-day ceasefire. The proposal is being treated as a preliminary step for a broader end of hostilities.
Trump has declared on different occasions that it considers unlikely for Ukraine to fully recover the territories currently controlled by Russian forces.
The US President defends the construction of an agreement based on concessions from both parties.
On Sunday, 16, Mike Waltz stated that the conflict resolution will imply, according to his assessment, the resignation of territorial areas by Ukraine as part of the understanding to be negotiated.
Discussions about possible US nuclear infrastructure management occur in parallel to diplomatic negotiations.
The proposal was presented as an alternative to ensure the safety of the facilities without the need for foreign military presence in the territory. There is no technical or legal details so far on the terms of this eventual transfer of control.
Russia has not yet officially commented on the proposal mentioned by Trump and Wright. Nor was there a manifestation of the Ukrainian government about the possibility of assigning the management or ownership of the plants to another country.
Control of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has been one of the sensitive points throughout the conflict. Since the beginning of the war, attacks on electrical and nuclear installations have been recorded in different regions, with impact on supply and safety risks. Nuclear plants are among the main strategic actives of Ukraine and have been concerned with international organizations.
The eventual participation of the United States in the operation of these facilities may be the subject of debate among the countries involved in diplomatic negotiations. White House representatives did not specify whether the proposal will formally be included in the documents that will be presented in the Sunday negotiation round.
The meeting in Saudi Arabia will have representatives from other observing countries, but there is still no official confirmation about the presence of European delegations or the United Nations.
The war in Ukraine has completed more than two years and remains without a definitive resolution. Ongoing negotiations indicate a possible diplomatic advance, although there is no consensus among the parties on the final terms of a possible peace agreement.
