The United States could carry out its threat of military intervention in Iran within the next 24 hours, according to a European official interviewed by Reuters. The possibility of an attack was not ruled out by two other sources, one European and the other Israeli, amid the worsening political and social crisis in the Persian country.

According to the Israeli source, the president Donald Trump would have demonstrated a willingness to intervene, although the scope of the possible operation and the exact moment in which it could occur have not yet been defined. Authorities consulted state that the scenarios remain under evaluation, given the rapid evolution of events in Iran.

The protests in Iran began at the end of December, after traders of Tehran closed stores in reaction to the strong devaluation of the rial, which reached historic lows against the dollar. The demonstrations spread across several cities and began to incorporate broader demands against the government.

Trump publicly declared that the United States could intervene if protesters were killed. On Tuesday, the American president addressed “Iranian patriots”, encouraging the continuation of the protests and stating that “help is on the way”. The statements increased diplomatic tension and reinforced fears of military escalation.

The Iranian government, in turn, accuses the United States and Israel of stimulating the protests through “soft war” strategies and infiltration by extremist groups, including members of the self-styled Islamic State. Tehran authorities say foreign forces are exploiting internal instability to destabilize the country.

According to an Iranian official cited by Reuters, around 2,000 people — including protesters and members of the security forces — have already died since the mobilizations began. The number has not been confirmed by independent sources.

Earlier, the Iranian government reiterated that it is determined to defend its sovereignty and national security against any external interference. Reuters also reported that Kurdish armed groups were trying to cross from Iraq into Iranian territory, a movement described by analysts as a possible sign of external actors seeking to take advantage of the unstable scenario.

The situation continues to evolve rapidly, while international concern grows about the risks of a direct military confrontation between the United States and Iran.
