Under the veil of national security, the US intensifies its agenda of economic coercion, targeting China’s progress in a desperate attempt to maintain its global hegemony

The US government’s labeling of Chinese technology companies as “military companies” is yet another example of the use of national security as a convenient pretext to justify unilateral, coercive and intimidating practices.

An analysis of the Pentagon’s list reveals that the focus is largely on China’s rapidly advancing technology sectors, such as high-speed rail, supercomputing, commercial aviation, artificial intelligence and drones.

Speaking to Xinhua, Chinese giant Tencent and leading battery maker CATL, both blacklisted, denied any military ties, calling the US Department of Defense designations false.

A similar case can be seen in the US Department of Commerce’s recent proposal to ban the supply of Chinese-made drones. Furthermore, none of the departments provided review criteria or evidence to support their actions.

These measures of extraterritorial jurisdiction reflect US paranoia, where foreign technological advantages are seen as threats to American national security and should be criminalized.

These actions only serve as a pretext for coercive movements that seek to overcome a strategic rival. Brian Tycangco, an analyst at Stansberry Research, criticized this approach: “If you are an innovative and profitable Chinese company, you are likely to be seen as a threat to US national security. Surreal.”

It is essential to recognize that such dishonest tactics undermine both economic strength and global technological leadership.

Chinese drone manufacturer DJI, for example, contributed $515 million to the US agricultural sector in 2023 alone, according to the company itself. Local farmers, rescue workers and American filmmakers are deeply concerned about the impacts of a possible DJI ban.

In the final month of the Biden administration, sanctions and rules were hastily introduced to curb China’s economic growth and technological development, including investment bans in the AI, semiconductor and quantum computing sectors, as well as a trade investigation into China’s legacy chips.

The Biden administration’s “final frenzy” to decouple from China and curb its growth has broken many of its previous promises and exposed its deceitful and hypocritical nature. This leaves a dark political legacy and complicates the next US president’s approach to relations with China.

Sensible American politicians should respect the Chinese people’s inalienable right to development and reconsider unfounded restrictions that harm both parties and the global stage as a whole.
