The United States has announced the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing, including Mexico, Costa Rica e Panamaas part of the new Western Hemisphere Semiconductor Initiative.

The revelation was made by the Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenduring the opening speech at the ministerial plenary meeting of the Partnership of the Americas em Washington.

The initiative, part of an ongoing effort initiated by President Joe Biden during the 2022 Summit of the Americas, aims to promote regional economic integration and strengthen democracy through improvements in the labor market.

Blinken noted that the initiative emerged after a symposium held in Costa Rica in January, focusing on increasing the region’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

“This initiative will turbocharge countries’ ability to assemble, test and package semiconductors,” he said, emphasizing the strategic importance of the technology.

The U.S. effort to diversify semiconductor manufacturing also aligns with the quest for supply chain security, especially given tensions between Taiwan and China, with Taiwan controlling 70% of the global market.

A Intel has already invested significantly in Costa Rica, and recent legislation Chips and Science Act de 2022which is allocated US$ 53 billion for the sector, promises to accelerate these developments.

Furthermore, the US Department of State is evaluating the conditions in Panama e Mexico for future collaborations, indicating a concerted effort to strengthen local production and technological independence in the face of Asia.
