UNICEF’s deputy executive director Ted Chaiban, after his last trip to the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel, made a complaint about the situation of children in the Gaza Strip: “They are dying at an unprecedented rhythm.” It is his fourth visit to the region since 2023, and he stressed that “the marks of deep suffering and hunger” are evident “in the faces of families and children”
In a conversation with press representatives, Chaiban warned that the high temperatures, combined with the scarcity of water produced by the state of Israel, represent a “imminent risk” of disease outbreaks in Gaza.
“We are in a crossroads. The decisions that will now be made will determine if tens of thousands of children will live or die. We know what to do and what can be done. UN and non -governmental organizations that integrate the humanitarian community can face this,” he said.
Data collected on this trip revealed that Gaza exceeded the hunger threshold. One in three people in the track spend days without eating and the global acute malnutrition reached 16.5% of the population in the city of Gaza. Today, there are over 320,000 young children at risk of suffering acute malnutrition.
The UNICEF representative reported to have known “the families of the 10 murdered boys and the 19 injured by an Israeli air strike while in line with mothers and parents in a nutritional clinic in Deir El-Balah.” He stressed: “The children I have known are not victims of a natural disaster. They are displaced and bombarded.”
UNICEF provides 2.4 million liters of water per day in the Gaza Strip, offers psychosocial support to children, maintains alive newborns and distributes milk to the most vulnerable babies.
“There is a long time to do. We ask that between more humanitarian aid and trade to stabilize the situation and reduce the despair of the population,” Chaiban said. He also criticized the fact that “children should not die while rows in a nutritional center or collect water,” referring to the situation of Humanitarian Foundation Gaza, managed by Israel and the US.
