Zelenskiy praises Trump’s peace initiative, but warns that a ceasefire without a solid plan could quickly fall apart

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcomed the possibility of Donald Trump launching an effort to end the war in Russia, but warned against pushing for a ceasefire agreement that could easily fail.

“I really want Trump to help us end this war,” Zelenskiy told reporters in Brussels after a meeting with European Union leaders, even as he defied growing speculation about how to stop nearly three years of fighting.

Even if Russia’s Vladimir Putin agreed to a ceasefire, he said an order to resume fighting would quickly dismantle an agreement if it were not a “real plan.”

“Who will lose? Everyone,” Zelenskiy said. “Everyone who made this decision. I don’t want that.”

The Ukrainian leader secured renewed assurances from EU leaders and met some of his biggest supporters at a meeting hosted by NATO chief Mark Rutte on Wednesday night. Many have reinforced the notion that Kiev, whose troops are under pressure from a coordinated Russian attack, must be in the strongest position possible before any negotiations to end the conflict begin.

And with Trump poised to take office with promises of a quick end to the war — and with many in his party calling for a halt to aid — Zelenskiy called for a common line between the US and the EU. The Ukrainian leader made an urgent appeal for concrete security guarantees that Kiev would need to defend itself.

Trump has not provided details on how he intends to stop the fighting. The president-elect and his national security appointees have suggested that Ukraine may have to leave swathes of territory in limbo in exchange for security guarantees that will likely fall short of NATO membership.

Zelenskiy declined to outline the details of his demands for security guarantees. As Ukraine faces its third full winter of war with a decimated power system, the president has focused his calls on bolstering the country’s air defenses and munitions.

The leaders also addressed a French proposal for a potential post-war peacekeeping force. Zelenskiy, asked about the idea, said any such plan would need to be developed. “We need details,” he said.

EU leaders used the joint conclusions of Thursday’s summit to call for “the urgent intensification of efforts, in particular in the delivery of air defense systems, ammunition and missiles, as well as in providing necessary training and equipment to Ukrainian brigades ”, according to the text.

Asked how he felt ahead of Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, Zelenskiy responded: “Welcome, Donald.”
