Tel Aviv authorities have stated that an Ankara confrontation may occur if the country persists in treating Syria as a “Turkish protectorate.”
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry says that Israel is the “greatest threat” to peace in Western Asia, condemning dozens of Israeli air strikes that hit various military places in Syria on Wednesday.
“Israel has become the main threat to the security of our region through its attacks on territorial integrity and the national unit of regional countries. As a strategic destabilizer in the region, Israel causes riot and feeds terrorism,” says a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on April 3.
“Therefore, to establish security throughout the region, Israel must first abandon its expansionist policies, to withdraw from the territories that occupies and stop undermine the efforts to establish stability in Syria,” the statement adds.
On Wednesday night, Israeli war planes launched an intense bombing campaign for Syria that killed at least 11 people. The main targets of the attack were the Barzeh Scientific Research Center on the outskirts of Damascus, Hama Military Airport in Western Syria and T4 air base near Palmira.
The Israeli bombardment almost completely destroyed Hama airport.
According to several reports in the Israeli media, the attacks intended to send a message to the Turkish government. “We will not allow you to establish a presence in Syria,” authorities told Jerusalem Post.
In recent weeks, Ankara has begun the process of taking the Tiyas Air Base in the Central Homs province, Syria, also known as the T4 air base, with plans to equip it with a complex defense system that includes short, medium and long range skills against jets, drones and missiles.
Earlier Thursday, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Ankara of playing a “negative role” in Syria, saying “they are doing their best to have Syria as a Turkish protectorate. It is clear that this is their intention.”
In response, Ankara said that Israeli ministers could not divert the attention of their ethnic cleaning campaign in Gaza and the “total war against the Palestinian people, colonist terrorism, the Batten’s annexation plans and expansionist ambitions behind the attacks on Syria and Lebanon” aiming at Turkey.
Despite increased tensions, the energy ties between Ankara and Tel Aviv remain strong, as the Turkish government continues to allow Azerbaijan’s oil flow via Porto de Ceyhan to Israel.
