The reactions of US and foreign lawmakers after Trump attacked Iran

US lawmakers reacted to the violence that erupted in the Middle East.

Jim Himesa top Democrat on the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said:

“Everything I heard from the administration before and after these attacks on Iran confirms that This is a war of choice, without an ultimate strategic objective. As I expressed to [secretário de Estado] Rubio when he briefed the Group of Eight (high-ranking parliamentarians from both parties in the House and Senate) on military action in this region It almost never ends well for the United Statesand a conflict with Iran could easily intensify in ways we cannot predict. It seems that Donald Trump has not learned the lessons of history.

The president’s own statement recognizes that this is a war, and the Constitution requires the government to request authorization from Congress, something it did not do. Next week, the House will vote on a resolution on war powers, and I will support that resolution. In the meantime, I will be praying for the safety of our military and all civilians who are in danger.”

The Democratic Senator Ed Markey shared this sentiment, saying:

“Trump’s military strike against Iran it is illegal and unconstitutional. It was not approved by Congress and poses danger to all Americans. Trump’s illegal actions increase the threat of escalation into a wider regional warcom serious risks to US troops and civilians in the region. Trump exaggerated the imminence of the Iranian nuclear threateven after insisting that the United States “annihilated” Iran’s nuclear program during its illegal Operation Midnight Hammer. Even Secretary of State Mark Rubio admitted that Iran is not enriching uranium. There was time for diplomacy before this attack, and there still is.”

The Democratic Senator Andy Kim expressed his concern about the strikes, saying:

“Americans do not want to go to war with Iran.

By launching attacks, President Trump took the same dangerous and foolish decision that President George Bush made a generation ago. He put Americans in danger without clearly demonstrating that there is an imminent threat to our national security. He has endangered the Iranian people by inciting them to rebel without a broad coalition of partners to assist in their protection. And Trump, once again, started a cycle of violence that has already intensified and could get out of control. This is unacceptable.”

The Republican Senator John Cornyn supported Trump’s decision to attack Iran, saying:

“For too long, Iran and its terrorist tentacles have destabilized the Middle East and waged war against the West and our values. With today’s attacks by American forces led by our commander in chief, President Trump, there is finally an opening for these dark days to come to an end.

I hope that the Iranian people, after years of oppression and being ignored by previous Democratic administrations, are finally free, and I am proud of the support being given by President Trump and the United States.”

The Democratic Senator John Fetterman also expressed his support for the strikes, stating:

“Operation Epic Fury.

President Trump has shown himself willing to do what is right and necessary to achieve true peace in the region.

God bless the United States, our great military and Israel.”

Republican congressman Thomas Massie opposed military action, stating:

“I’m against this war. This is not ‘America First.’

When Congress resumes activities, I will work with [o representante democrata Ro Khanna] to force a vote in Congress on war with Iran.”

The Irish Prime Minister, Michael Martinsaid he was “deeply concerned” about the risk of a broader conflict in the Middle East, after the United States and Israel launched missile attacks against Iran.

In a statement, the prime minister said:

“I am deeply concerned about developments in Iran and the real potential for escalation and broader conflict in the region. I strongly urge all parties to exercise restraint and work to avoid this outcome.

Ireland has always believed that conflicts should be resolved through diplomacy and negotiation, in line with the principles of the UN Charter and international law. This should apply to this situation as much as any other.

The protection of civilian life in Iran, Israel and all neighboring countries must now be paramount.”

UK, Germany and France condemn Iranian attacks

The United Kingdom, Germany and France have condemned Iranian attacks against countries in the region, saying Iran must refrain from indiscriminate military strikes.

They did not comment on the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a statement saying their countries did not take part in the attacks on Iran, but remain in close contact with the United States, Israel and partners in the region.

The three countries have led efforts to reach a negotiated solution over Iran’s nuclear program.

“We strongly condemn Iranian attacks against countries in the region. Iran must refrain from indiscriminate military strikes. We call for the resumption of negotiations and urge the Iranian leadership to seek a negotiated solution. Ultimately, the Iranian people must have the freedom to determine their own future.”
