The special ICE operation in Minnesota ends. This was announced by Tom Homan, Donald Trump’s so-called ‘border czar’, in an appearance before the press this Thursday in Minneapolis.
The massive deployment of ICE in Minnesota, with up to 3,000 federal agents since December 1, has resulted in the murder of Renee Good, on January 3, and Alex Pretti, on January 24, shot by federal agents.
In relation to these murders, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison stated this Thursday before the Senate that it is very unusual that the state is being excluded from shooting investigations. “So far we haven’t had any cooperation, which is really unusual,” said Ellison, who explained that the federal government hinders the state’s work.
“With this and the success achieved in stopping threats to public safety and other priorities since this operation began, as well as the unprecedented coordination we have achieved with state officials and local law enforcement, I have proposed, and President Trump has agreed, that this operation conclude,” Homan announced: “A significant reduction in personnel has already begun this week and we will continue into next week.”
“We have a lot of work to do across the country to eliminate public safety risks that shouldn’t even be in the country,” Homan continued: “To meet President Trump’s concerns for strong border security and mass deportations, agents removed from this operation will return to their jobs or be assigned to other assignments. To do just that, we will continue to enforce immigration law across the country, prioritizing national security threats and public safety risks.”
Federal authorities say massive raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have resulted in the arrests of more than 4,000 people.
Homan announced last week that 700 federal agents would leave Minnesota immediately, but there were still more than 2,000 on the streets. And he added this Thursday that the withdrawal began this week and will continue next week, while saying that he plans to stay in Minnesota to supervise the withdrawal.
While the Trump Administration has called those arrested “illegal alien dangerous criminals,” many people without criminal records, including minors and U.S. citizens, have also been detained.
A recent information from CBS showed that Less than 14% of ICE arrests in the US correspond to people with violent crimes.
About 6 in 10 American adults say President Donald Trump has gone too far by sending federal immigration agents to American cities, according to a new AP-NORC poll. Also 6 in 10 Americans believe that Trump has gone too far by using federal law enforcement in public protests in American cities.
The poll also reveals that the Republican Party’s lead on immigration has narrowed since October. About 3 in 10 American adults trust Republicans to handle immigration better, while a similar percentage says the same about Democrats. About 3 in 10 do not believe that either party would handle the issue better, and about 1 in 10 say both parties would do so equally effectively.
In October, 39% of American adults said they trusted Republicans to handle immigration better, while 26% said the same about Democrats, giving the GOP a 13-point lead. In the new survey, the difference between the parties is only 4 points.
Republican Senator Rand Paul (Kentucky) stated this Thursday in a Senate committee session to evaluate the immigration operation in Minnesota that filming government officials in a free society is a “constitutional right” and not an “act of aggression.” Paul criticized what he called a “rush” following the killings and said that while he supports ICE, they still have work to do to “restore public trust.”
