Donald Trump, president-elect of the United States, caused controversy when he shared a map on his Truth Social network that represents Canada as a North American territory. This publication took place on Tuesday, 7th, at an already delicate moment due to the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly criticized Trump’s statements. “The president-elect’s comments demonstrate a complete misunderstanding of what makes Canada a strong country. We will never retreat in the face of threats,” said Joly.

Trudeau, in turn, in his last statements as prime minister, reiterated his country’s sovereignty: “Canada will never, ever be part of the United States.”

The tension between the two countries is not new. In November, during a dinner, Trump suggested that Canada should consider becoming the “51st state” of the US to avoid high trade tariffs, a line that was seen as a provocation.

This suggestion was later expanded on the republican’s social media, who stated: “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state. They would save too much on taxes and military protection. I think it’s a great idea. State 51!!!”.

In addition to Canada, Trump mentioned other territorial ambitions, including Greenland and the Panama Canal, but denied that he would use military force for any annexation, betting on “economic strength”.

Internationally, Trump’s stance was widely criticized. Experts and world leaders question the attempt to eliminate the Canadian border, citing national security concerns. As a founding member of NATO and a significant supplier of commodities, Canada is considered crucial to regional stability.

With Trump’s inauguration scheduled for January 20, the relationship between the United States and Canada faces new uncertainties. The president-elect’s rhetoric is already impacting political alliances and could affect economic markets. Canadian resistance to Trump’s suggestions remains strong, with leaders reaffirming the country’s independence and sovereignty.
