Former US President Donald Trump said that if re-elected in November, he would create a commission on “government efficiency” led by entrepreneur Elon Musk. The statement was made during a campaign speech at the New York Economic Club, where Trump presented his economic proposals.

His promises include familiar measures such as reducing regulations on energy production, cutting government spending and lowering corporate taxes for American companies. However, he also revealed less expected plans, such as the adoption of cryptocurrencies and the creation of a commission led by Musk, with the aim of eliminating fraud and improper payments in the government within six months.

Trump explained that the commission would conduct a financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and recommend significant reforms. While there is already a Government Accountability Office (GAO), a nonpartisan federal agency that monitors government spending and performance, Trump did not provide details on how the new commission would work.

The proposal was criticized by Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, who said Trump and Musk were trying to dismantle the nonpartisan civil service and replace it with political allies. Musk, for his part, said on X that he would accept the position if Trump won the election, mentioning that he had already discussed the issue with the former president.

The economy is at the center of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris facing off. Harris has put forward a populist economic platform that aims to rein in skyrocketing food prices, support first-time homebuyers and offer tax incentives for building affordable housing.

In a recent speech, Trump reiterated his intention to reduce the corporate tax rate from 21 percent to 15 percent for companies that produce products in the United States. He also spoke of opening federal lands to low-tax, low-regulation housing.

Polls suggest Trump is seen as more qualified to handle economic issues than Harris, although the two are tied in polls nationally and in key states.
