The United States government will implement a new charge for foreigners requesting a visa from 2026. The measure, approved by President Donald Trump on July 4, was released by the newspaper Economic value and includes the creation of the call visa integrity feewith value of US $ 250 (approximately R $ 1,390).

The charge will add to the standard consular fee of US $ 185 (R $ 1,080), raising the total cost to $ 435 (R $ 2,470), plus US $ 24 (R $ 133) from Form I-95, required for entry into the country. With this, the total value of the process could reach US $ 459 (R $ 2,552), according to estimates of the publication.

The new rate is part of the legislative package approved by the US Congress known as big, beautiful billexpression used by Trump to describe the project that deals with tax and budgetary guidelines. The forecast is that the collection officially comes into force in 2026.

Reimbursement and readjustment rules still raise doubts

According to the text of the new law, the value of visa integrity fee It may be adjusted annually based on United States inflation. The final definition of the parameters will be under the responsibility of National Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The legislation, however, does not specify the criteria or limits for readjustments or future changes.

The $ 250 charge will only be applied if the visa is actually granted. In negative cases, the value will not be required. Nevertheless, reimbursement of the rate, when allowed, can only be requested after the visa expires. For example, if a applicant obtains a tour visa validity of ten years, the return can only be requested after the end of this period.

The legislation establishes three conditions for the reimbursement to be authorized: proof that the bearer has not tried to reign in the United States after the visa is due; full compliance with the rules during legal stay in the country; and request for change or extent of migratory status within the expiration date. Still, there are no details about administrative procedures to make the return request, no deadlines for analysis or payment.

Expected impacts on tourism and the visa sector

The Trump administration’s decision has generated concern in the tourism sector, especially due to the proximity of the 2026 World Cup, which will have matches on US soil. Industry representatives evaluate that the enhancement of the visa process can discourage the coming of international tourists, including Brazilians.

According to information from Economic valuetravel companies and sector associations press the US government for clarification and possible adjustments in the implementation of the new policy. One of the main points of criticism is in the reimbursement criteria, considered complex and difficult to access the general public.

The increase in costs also affects students and temporary workers who plan travel to the United States. Combined with the I-95 form charge, the final amount may exceed $ 2,500 for each applicant. To date, the US State Department has not published official updates on the new fee, nor on guidelines for its application.

More rigid migratory policy marks according to Trump’s mandate

The institution of visa integrity fee It is part of a set of measures adopted by the current US administration since Donald Trump’s inauguration for the second term in January 2025. The actions follow a line of hardening of the migratory rules and increased tax revenues, focused on the control of foreign entry in the country.

In addition to the new rate, the Trump government has promoted revisions in visa grant policies, documentary requirements and permanence deadlines. Although the impact on the volume of orders cannot yet be measured, analysts expect a reduction in demand, especially in lower income categories.

The Congress -approved legislative package also states that any changes in the collection of fees and in reimbursement conditions may be made via regulation, without a new parliamentary vote. This expands the executive’s discretionary power on foreign entry policies.

Government has not yet detailed application mechanisms

Despite the sanction of the new fee, the US State Department has not yet updated its official website with information about the visa integrity fee. US officials also did not publicly comment on the regulation schedule or the implementation of the new model.

The indefinition of deadlines and procedures increases the pressure of agencies and entities of the tourism sector, which call for greater predictability for international travel planning. New guidelines are expected to be published in 2025, with time to adapt consular systems before the rate’s entry into force.

Meanwhile, Brazilian and other nationalities are waiting for definitions of collection criteria, reimbursement possibilities and possible exceptions. The financial and bureaucratic impact of new rules can directly influence the flow of tourists, students and workers to the United States from 2026.
