Trump surrenders to Xi and announces trade truce with China

The President of China, Xi Jinping, stated this Thursday (30) that China and the United States have advanced in economic understandings and reached consensus on trade issues considered sensitive by the world’s two largest economies. The statement was made during a meeting with US President Donald Trump, shortly after Xi’s arrival in Busan, South Korea, where he will participate in the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, as well as a state visit to the Asian country.

According to Xi, teams from the two governments held “in-depth” talks, which resulted in initial agreements to resolve recent trade impasses and establish mechanisms for continuing dialogue.

Cooperation as a strategic axis

The Chinese leader stated that the economic relationship must function as a basis for stability and boosting bilateral relations, arguing that commercial disputes cannot be transformed into an instrument of geopolitical pressure. Xi highlighted that the long-term interests of both countries require that any disagreements do not evolve into cycles of retaliation.

According to him, Washington and Beijing should focus efforts on reducing areas of conflict and expanding scopes of understanding, prioritizing what he called “reciprocal benefit” and “mutual respect”.

“Cooperation must function as a ballast and engine for bilateral relations, and not as a source of instability,” said Xi, in a message carried by the Chinese press.

Continuity of dialogue and economic agenda

Xi further stated that economic groups from both countries were advised to hold regular talks, with the aim of transforming recent understandings into concrete actions that ensure predictability for companies and global markets.

The announcement comes at a time of global trade tension, marked by technological disputes, tariff barriers and strategic industrial policies adopted by China and the United States in sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy and data security.

The meeting between Xi and Trump takes place in parallel with the APEC debates, which this year address topics such as economic coordination, supply chains and technological transition.

Diplomatic context

The public resumption of dialogue between the two presidents comes after months of alternating signs of rapprochement and friction. For international analysts, Xi’s speech seeks to reduce uncertainty in the markets and reaffirm Chinese interest in managing tensions with Washington without commercial disruption.

The meeting’s agenda did not include specific details about tariffs, technological barriers or strategic security measures, but members of the delegations informed that negotiations will continue at ministerial level.

The Chinese government has highlighted that the central objective is to avoid economic escalations that could affect global trade flows and investments, at a time when the world economy is facing a slowdown and simultaneous geopolitical challenges.
