The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is preparing an offensive to significantly relax the federal rules governing marijuana in the country. The initiative must occur through an executive order that will direct government agencies to reclassify the substance, reducing the level of control currently imposed on the plant and its derivatives.
The information was revealed by the newspaper Washington Postwhich heard from six people with direct knowledge of the internal discussions. According to the report, the proposal under analysis provides for the classification of marijuana in category III of the federal list of controlled drugs — the same assigned to certain prescription painkillers and other medicines subject to control, but with recognized therapeutic use.
Currently, marijuana is classified in a more restrictive category, alongside substances considered to have no accepted medical value and a high potential for abuse. The eventual change would represent a relevant change in North American federal policy, by reducing regulatory supervision and bringing the legal treatment of marijuana closer to that of drugs widely used in clinical practice.
According to sources cited by Washington PostTrump must formally order federal agencies — such as the Department of Justice and health regulators — to adopt the new classification. The measure would pave the way for a redesign of the status of marijuana in federal legislation, with direct impacts on scientific research, health policies, inspection, taxation and administrative processes linked to the use of the substance.
Although several North American states have already legalized the medicinal or recreational use of marijuana, the substance remains banned at the federal level, creating a scenario of legal uncertainty. Reclassification would not mean automatic nationwide legalization, but it would reduce federal barriers and could facilitate scientific studies and less restrictive regulatory practices.
To date, the White House has not officially commented on the timeline of the possible executive order or the exact scope of the intended changes. The topic, however, is expected to reignite political and legal debates in the United States, especially between states, the medical sector, the pharmaceutical industry and groups opposed to easing the rules.
