Donald Trump states that a trade agreement with the UK is underway and suggests that the country can escape the tariffs applied to the European Union
US President Donald Trump said his government is working on a commercial agreement with the United Kingdom, while suggesting that Britain could escape tariffs if such agreement were closed. According to the Financial Times, during a press conference at the Oval Hall on Thursday (27), Trump said that US Vice President JD Vance and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were among the senior republicans of the government working on possible agreement.
“I think we’ll have the boundaries, I think we’ll have something – maybe even in terms of possibilities – awake very soon,” said Trump.
“We’ll see if we can do something very fast, but we’ll do some big business agreements with the UK,” he added.
Strmer confirmed that the United Kingdom and the US decided on Thursday “start working on a new economic agreement with advanced technology at its nucleus.”
Trump added that if such agreement is closed, the United Kingdom may escape the tariffs, even if he plans to impose rates on the EU.
“I believe there is a great chance that in the case of these two great friendly countries … We could well end with a real business agreement, where the tariffs would not be necessary,” said Trump.
The comments were made at the end of a bilateral meeting in which Stmerer asked Trump to provide US military coverage to secure peace in Ukraine and make it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin, that any future Moscow aggression would be repelled.
In return, he wants Trump to provide a US backstop to support a European stabilization force in Ukraine, including aerial cover, heavy transport aircraft, air intelligence and missiles.
However, Trump refused to commit to providing any military support, saying that the US would provide an effective impediment to potential Russian aggression by keeping its workers in Ukraine under a mineral agreement proposed with Kiev.
