During a speech at the Economic Club of New York, former President Donald Trump announced that if re-elected, he will appoint Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to lead a new government commission on efficiency.
This commission will take a close look at the federal government’s finances and performance, with the aim of eliminating inefficiencies and excessive spending.
New DOGE Commission for more efficient government
Trump explained in his speech that the idea for the commission came from Elon Musk himself. Despite his busy schedule, Musk has pledged to lead the commission and play a key role in reforming the U.S. government, Trump said. “We cannot continue as we are,” Trump stressed, adding that Musk has given him his “complete and total support.”
The commission, to be called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), will recommend sweeping reforms to reduce waste and inefficiency in government. Musk, who has spoken out about the need for such a commission on X (formerly Twitter) before, called the project “epic.”
Dogecoin reference creates excitement
The DOGE acronym for the new committee immediately caught the attention of the Dogecoin community. Musk, known as the “Dogefather” for his involvement with Dogecoin, excited his followers with the choice of the name. While the Dogecoin reference has not been officially confirmed, the name choice has led to speculation about Musk’s possible intentions.
Musk: “America on the road to bankruptcy”
Musk has repeatedly expressed his concerns about the financial situation of the U.S. government in the past. He warned that current government spending is putting the country on “the highway to bankruptcy.” “Government overspending is the cause of inflation,” Musk wrote in one of his posts.
He also said that anyone with strong ties to certain government agencies will be given the opportunity to have their say, suggesting that a comprehensive review of government departments may be on the horizon.
Trump’s economic plan
Musk’s warnings echo Trump’s broader economic reforms. Trump advisers have stressed that the commission’s creation is a key part of his broader economic strategy, which includes tax cuts, higher tariffs and a rollback of the Inflation Reduction Act.
The commission’s first goal is to eliminate fraud and improper payments within the government within six months. Trump hopes to achieve significant savings for the American taxpayer.
