Donald Trump suggests exploring ways to a third term as president of the United States, despite the constitutional limits.

US President Donald Trump said he “is not joking” about seeking a third term, which is prohibited by the United States Constitution.

Speaking of a telephone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump directly addressed speculation about a potential third term, saying, “No, I’m not kidding. I’m not,” but added, “It’s too early to think about it.”

“There are methods you can do this, as you know,” he said, without going into details about possible legal or political roads.

The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution limits presidents to two four -year terms, consecutive or not.

The 22nd amendment says that “no person will be elected to the position of president more than twice.”

Trump was asked in the NBC interview about a scenario in which his mate, vice president JD Vance, could take office before departing to allow him to take over. Trump acknowledged the possibility, stating, “this is a” approach.

“But there are others too,” he added, without further details.

“We are working on it”

Revaging the 22nd amendment would require a majority of two thirds in both Congress houses and the ratification of three quarters from the 50 US states.

Trump, who began his second non -consecutive term in January, has repeatedly suggested extending his time in office.

Some of his allies also suggested the idea of keeping him in power beyond 2028, while Trump himself occasionally caused this possibility, often in ways that provoke his political opponents.

If he tried another term in the 2028 election, Trump, who was the oldest president to take office in the US in January 2025, would be 82 years old.

The precedent of a limit of two terms dates back to 1796, when George Washington voluntarily resigned after two terms.

This tradition remained widely undisputed for more than 140 years until Franklin D Roosevelt gained a third term in 1940 amidst Great Depression and World War II. Roosevelt died months after his fourth term in 1945, leading Congress to formalize the mandate limits with the 22nd amendment in 1951.

Trump’s former counselor Steve Bannon suggested in an interview of March to the newsnation that Trump could try to reelection in 2028.

“We are working on it,” Bannon said, adding that his team was exploring ways to reinterpret the definition of mandate limits to facilitate a third term.
