During an explosive speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump declared that he wants to add Greenland to the United States. He rules out military action. He also lashed out at European leaders, predicted a doubling of the American stock market and announced that he would soon sign a crypto law.
Trump: ‘We want Greenland, but without violence’
Trump called Greenland a strategically vital area that he believes could be better managed by the US than by Denmark. “Only the United States can protect, develop and make this gigantic piece of ice safe for Europe and ourselves,” Trump said. He called for “immediate negotiations” on a takeover.
“I don’t need to use violence. I don’t want to use violence. I won’t use violence,” he said emphatically. Yet there was a warning in his words: “Say yes and we will be grateful. Say no and we will not forget.”
According to Trump, Denmark has failed to honor previous defense agreements on Greenland. He also referred to the American role in World War II: “We gave Greenland back. How stupid was that?”
Lashing out at Europe and France
In his speech, Trump did not spare his European allies. “Some parts of Europe are no longer recognisable,” he said, referring to mass migration. France took a personal hit, especially President Macron. Trump joked about his sunglasses and threatened heavy tariffs on French wine if France does not accept higher prices for American medicines.
He was gloomy about NATO: “What do we get in return, except death, destruction and money for people who don’t appreciate us?”
Stock market doubles, crypto on the way
Trump was remarkably optimistic about the American economy. “Our stock market dip is peanuts. That stock market is going to double,” he said. According to him, the Dow Jones will “touch 50,000” and then “double to 100,000 in a relatively short time.”
He also indicated that he hopes to soon sign the Clarity Act, a law that should provide clarity in American crypto regulation. Senator Cynthia Lummis, co-author of the bill, responded to X: “Right on, Mr. President. It’s time to get the Clarity Act across the finish line.”
Domestic plans and energy policy
Trump also had news to report on the domestic front. For example, he wants to lower the interest on credit cards for one year and ban institutional buyers of houses. “The US is not going to be a nation of renters,” he emphasized.
Finally, he reiterated his distaste for sustainable energy. He again called wind turbines “ugly” and a “sign of economic decline”.
