Revenge against the BRICS. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, published on Wednesday his letter to Lula in which he communicates a 50% tariff to Brazilian products that enter the United States. The measure has a lot to do with the challenge that supposes in the global south represented in the BRICs – Brazil, Russia, indicates, China and South Africa -, to which Trump already announced that would impose an extra punishment of 10%.
In the case of Brazil, on April 2 the planned tariffs were 10%, a figure much lower than the current 50%.
What bothers Trump the most is the BRICS project to launch a currency that can compete with the dollar as a preferential currency in international transactions.
The US president has also recently left in defense of Jair Bolsonaro, a Brazilian former president, who is being tried for trying a military coup after Lula’s electoral victory. Thus, in his letter to Lula, the US president mentions “the unfortunate treatment” that, in his opinion, is suffering former president Bolsonaro: “It is a witch hunt that must stop immediately.” Trump also speaks of “persecution of freedom of expression and the rights of Americans”, for judicial causes in Brazil against bulos in social networks.
Trump, in addition, has announced Wednesday that he will impose tariffs of 20% to the imports of the Philippines; 25 % to Brunei and Moldova; Already Algeria, Iraq and Libya, 30%.
Trump has already sent letters to Japan and South Korea on Monday, which will charge 25% tariffs. In addition, he imposed on Laos and Burmania tariffs of 40 %; 30 % to South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina; 36% to Cambodia and Thailand; 35 % for Serbia and Bangladesh; 32% to Indonesia; while Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Tunisia would be 25%.
In addition, he said he will tax with a 50% tariff to copper – the same as steel and aluminum – and advanced that provides tariffs of up to 200% for pharmaceutical products if their manufacturers are not installed in the US.
