US President Donald Trump doubled the rates on imports from India from 25% to 50% on Wednesday (27). The rates charged on the country, which has the fifth largest economy in the world, are now among the highest charged by the United States worldwide, rivalry with the rates charged to imports in Brazil.
Trump’s justification for India’s last round of tariffs is to “punish” the country for importing Russian oil and “helping” Russia finance its war against Ukraine. The American leader recently held separate meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to mediate an agreement to end his war. However, negotiations remain in an impasse.
The US president has also warned that other countries that buy oil from Russia may face higher rates soon. China, for example, which is in a climb of diplomatic tension with the United States, is the largest buyer of Russian oil, and its products face a minimum rate of 30%.
The new wave of import tariffs can further aggravate the situation of the US economy. Consumers are already facing higher life costs resulting from the tariff campaign, the job market is shrinking and the dollar has been devaluing in the world market.
