Trump goes over the international criminal court after accusations against Netanyahu

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, will sign on Thursday, 6, a decree that establishes sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague.

The measure occurs after the Court indicates Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Predicted sanctions include financial restrictions and the revocation of Visas of TPI employees. The decree may also impact anyone involved in investigations that target US citizens or allies in the country, according to the journalist’s column information Jamil Chadedo UOL.

The announcement of the decree occurs two days after Trump released negotiations related to the withdrawal of Palestinians from Gaza.

Since the beginning of his term, Trump has been critical of the ICC, claiming that the court has no jurisdiction about the United States, as the country is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, a document that underlies the court. Israel does not integrate the Statute either.

“We believe that both the United States and Israel have independent judicial systems and should not submit to the jurisdiction of this Court,” Trump said in an official statement about the decision.

In November last year, the ICC issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu, accusing him of involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The prosecution refers to siege-related actions and attacks on Gaza. According to the court, the crimes are part of a systematic operation against the Palestinian civilian population.

TPI Attorney General Karim Khan said Gaza operations included severe restrictions on the entry of food, medicines and other essential products, as well as cuts in water supply and electricity. Khan pointed out that the evidence indicates a series of violations that fit the definition of crimes against humanity.

Israel reacted strikingly to the court decision. Netanyahu classified the accusations as “absurd” and “anti -Semitic”. He said that the country will not change its strategy in relation to Gaza and will continue to seek its military objectives.

The case also repercussions at the International Court of Justice, which, earlier this year, ordered Israel to adopt measures to prevent what he described as a risk of genocide in Gaza. The Israeli government rejected the guidelines.

The Minister of Security of Israel, Itamar Ben-Gvir, suggested in recent statements that the country should evaluate the possibility of attaching to West Bank as a response to ICC decisions.

Tensions climbing occurs amid a scenario of diplomatic pressures about the United States and Israel. Several international human rights groups have expressed concern about the situation in Gaza, while US authorities reaffirm support to Israel, arguing that actions are a matter of national security.

Trump’s decree represents an intensification of criticism of the ICC, which, since its creation for a little over two decades, has faced resistance from countries that are not significant in their founding status. The court was established with the objective of processing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, but has faced political challenges in its global action.

The signing of the decree will be accompanied by a press conference, in which the US government must present additional details about the sanctions. To date, the ICC has not officially commented on the decision.
