A call between the leaders of the United States and Venezuela took place last week, amid growing tension between the countries.
American President Donald Trump gave an ultimatum to his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, in a call between the two presidents last week, says a Miami Herald report published this Sunday (11/30).
According to the American newspaper, which had access to anonymous high-ranking sources in the US government, Trump would have offered the leader of Venezuela the chance to “save himself and his family”, as long as he leaves power.
“According to the sources, the message from the United States to Maduro was direct: there would be a guarantee of security for him, his wife, Cilia Flores, and the couple’s son if the Venezuelan agreed to immediately resign from the government,” wrote the Miami Herald.
On Sunday, Trump told reporters that the two presidents spoke by phone last week. “I can’t say whether it happened well or badly, it was just a phone call,” declared the Republican, who did not reveal the topics covered in the phone call.
On Saturday, the American president announced, via social media, that Venezuela’s airspace would be closed “completely”, in a warning to “all airlines, pilots, drug traffickers and human traffickers”.
The declaration comes amid growing pressure from the United States, which has been mobilizing an extensive military apparatus in the Caribbean, close to the Venezuelan coast. According to Washington, the move aims to combat international trafficking.
Maduro’s demands
Also according to the Miami Herald, the telephone conversation between Trump and Maduro was mediated by three countries: Brazil, Qatar and Türkiye.
The Venezuelan reportedly asked for amnesty for the crimes he committed and demanded to maintain control of the country’s armed forces. In return, it would agree to hold new elections.
Finally, Washington would have insisted on Maduro’s resignation. The two countries did not reach an agreement on any of these three points.
According to the newspaper, the Venezuelan leader had, over the weekend, tried to call Trump again, after the American announced the closure of airspace in the country, but received no response from Washington.
On Sunday, Maduro sent a letter to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) denouncing military pressure from the United States.
“The United States intends to seize our country’s vast oil reserves, the largest in the world, through the use of military force, which would seriously affect the balance of the global energy market,” declared Maduro in the text.
